This lecture will explore how African Americans have engaged with the concepts of ancient Egypt and Nubia in literature since 1750. By examining writers such as Phillis Wheatley and W. E. B. Du Bois, Cox traces how the rhetorical relationship between Black authors and the ancient past shifted over time, always with the goal of advancing Black freedom and dignity.
